Peetz boys win Colorado state basketball tournament

PEETZ, Col. - After clinching the Colorado State Football Championship in November, 10 of the 12 players for the Peetz Bulldogs made the transition from the gridiron to the hardwood looking to capture another state title in basketball.

Finishing the regular season with an undefeated record of 19-0, the Bulldogs were primed for a deep run in the postseason starting with the 1A District Tournament. Upon making it to the Championship game, Peetz dropped their first game of the season in a one-point defeat, 63-62 versus Heritage Christian out of Fort Collins. Even with the loss, the Bulldogs were still able to receive a bid to the state tournament as the five-seed.

In their first round match-up, they met the fourth-seeded Sangre de Cristo and promptly returned to their winning ways with a 64-29 blowout victory. The win set up a meeting with the top-seed in Class 1A, the Creede Miners. Despite a double-double performance from senior Isaac Borchers of 33 points and 15 rebounds, the Bulldogs were able to outlast Creede in overtime to advance to the championship game with a 69-67 overtime win.

Their opponent would be the six-seed South Baca Patriots who pulled an upset of their own in their semifinal meeting against second-seeded Front Range Baptist, 64-57.

Being one step away from a state basketball championship to pair with the football trophy from earlier this school year, the senior laden Peetz squad came out focused and ready to go. Behind 23 points from senior Logan Sircy and another nine and eight from Gabe Naegele and Bryson Long, respectively, the Bulldogs captured the title with a 51-44 victory.

Seven seniors go out on top for Peetz as they brought the hardware back to Northeastern Colorado in their final season on the hardwood. Even with the senior leadership leaving the squad, several underclassmen received playing time throughout the year and will be relied upon next season to attempt to repeat as state champions.
