Investigation continues for threatening message found in Sidney Public School

SIDNEY, Neb. - Sidney authorities are still investigating a message left in the middle school bathroom referencing a school shooting found at the end of the day Tuesday (January 9). Sidney Police Chief Joe Aikens said Friday morning that video footage has been reviewed and authorities are continuing to investigate as leads develop.

Sidney Public Schools Superintendent Jay Ehler commended the teachers, staff, students, and administrators, along with the Sidney Police Department and Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office, for their efforts to enhance the security of the schools.

Ehler said that he visited multiple classrooms the day after the message was found, and that, “Without exception, teachers were teaching and students were learning. While everyone was operating at a high level of awareness and caution, they were doing so with an even higher level of professionalism. It was business as usual, and I am proud of our school district.”

Ehler said that he heard both commendations and concerns regarding how this issue was handled, and will consider what actions were successful and look for areas of improvement.
