Classes begin for use of Sidney Public Library makerspace equipment

SIDNEY, Neb. - Training classes are scheduled to begin Saturday for use of the equipment in the new Innovation Studio makerspace now available at the Sidney Public Library. The hands-on training process is required to ensure safe and proper use of the equipment.
Library Director Andrew Sherman says the makerspace has development and creation tools for the public to come in and be creative. The boiler room in the library was remodeled to house all of the new machines. The lab is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
The space includes a beam telepresence robot that allows experts in Lincoln to take control of the robot in Sidney and can assist in the projects being worked on.
Students will not be charged to use the lab and non-students can pay a $5 daily fee or a $25 monthly fee.
The equipment includes two 3D printers, a sewing machine, a carving router to carve into materials such as wood or plastics, a laser cutter engraver to cut with laser precision, along with audio and video equipment.
The University of Nebraska in Lincoln established the Co-Laboratory using Sidney as a test bed before potentially building a network of makerspaces around the state in small towns and places they wouldn't normally exist.
